The Visions of Joseph Vargo & the Gateways to the Darkside – For more than three decades, Joseph Vargo has breathed life into compelling, shadowy realms through an extraordinary array of artistic media. A true Renaissance man of the macabre, his creative mastery spans artwork, music, and literature. His gothic visions open a portal into the dark side, daring the brave to venture across the threshold. Through a mist-shrouded domain populated by forlorn ghosts, brooding vampires, and living gargoyles, Vargo has summoned an immense and devoted international following, reaching enthusiasts in every corner of the globe.
Alchemy and Persistence Through Time – The cornerstone of this gothic empire took root in 1991 with the founding of Monolith Graphics, a publishing house that celebrated three decades of dark innovation in 2021. Standing as a global leader in gothic-themed creations, Monolith serves an extensive clientele across the United States and in over a dozen nations worldwide. Their rich mantle of dark treasures encompasses books, magazines, calendars, t-shirts, posters, tarot decks, and music CDs.
Born of the Night – The Rise of a Sovereign Realm – International acclaim claimed Vargo in 1993 with the release of his seminal artistic series, Born of the Night—a title now synonymous with his name. His artwork has earned prestigious placement in Spectrum’s The Best in Contemporary Fantasy Art, Dark’s Art Parlor Dark Visions collection, and numerous iconic horror publications, including 32 magazine covers and countless interior illustrations for Dark Realms Magazine, Vampir, and the UK’s Bite Me. Beyond the printed page, his visual lore has been featured by broadcast and film giants such as NBC, Universal, A&E, 20th Century Fox, and The Discovery Channel.
Shadows Made Audible – The Soundscapes of Nox Arcana – In 1998 and 1999, Vargo produced, financed, directed, and performed on the gothic-themed albums Born of the Night and Realm of Shadows, fundamentally altering the sonic landscape of Halloween music. By 2003, he co-founded Nox Arcana alongside musician William Piotrowski. Renowned for their haunting soundscapes, classic horror references, and rich literary undercurrents, Nox Arcana features Vargo’s compositional and production prowess on every album. His musical reach extends further through collaborative projects with artists such as Michelle Belanger and Jeff Hartz of Buzz-Works, as well as guest narration and musical contributions for metal and horror bands, including Legion of the Damned and Acid Witch.
Chronicles of the Tower and Interactive Mysteries – Vargo’s literary and artistic catalog weaves a vast web of dark folklore. He authored and illustrated the Dark Tower series—comprising Tales From The Dark Tower, Beyond The Dark Tower, and Return To The Dark Tower—and crafted both The Gothic Tarot Cards and Compendium and The Legend of Darklore Manor and Other Tales of Terror, a collection featuring the novella that inspired Nox Arcana’s debut album. His art book, Born of the Night: The Gothic Fantasy Artwork of Joseph Vargo, gathers a decade of paintings and illustrations. In 2018, he expanded into interactive realms with The Cabinets of Doctor Arcana, an escape room-style computer game fusing his art, music, and writing, followed by its 2024 sequel, Doctor Arcana and the Secret of Shadowspire. Extending his influence into the realm of living art, Vargo has served as a sponsor and judge for the annual World Gothic Models competitions since 2020.

Christine Filipak – Digital Wizardry and Timeless Elegance – Weaving classical fine art techniques with digital wizardry, Christine Filipak crafts imagery of timeless elegance. Holding a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Kent State University, she is a voracious scholar drawn to ancient cultures and historical horror literature. Joining Monolith Graphics in 1992 as art director and production manager, her role evolved over the years to encompass business manager and media coordinator for the entire enterprise.
The Art Nouveau Spell and Compassionate Spirit – Filipak’s artistic precision guides the graphic design, layout, and prepress production of everything published by Monolith. Her creative resume includes co-writing and co-editing the gothic anthology Tales From The Dark Tower, as well as building and managing the digital domains for Monolith Graphics and Nox Arcana. In 2003, inspired by Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha, she created the lush artwork for Madame Endora’s Fortune Cards. Beyond the dark arts, her devotion extends to the natural world; an avid lover of animals—cats in particular—she champions the work of the ASPCA and The Humane Society, while dedicating her personal efforts to a baby bat rescue initiative.
